Information about common Eye conditions
Dry eye:
Decline in the volume and the quality of tear film impairing the lubrication and nourishment of the front part of the eye.
Cataract:
The development of cloudiness of the lens inside the eye; mostly age-related.
Glaucoma:
The progressive damage of the optic nerve fibers and reduction of vision. It is characterized by loss of nerve tissue that results in vision loss. Treatment is mostly based on reduction of intra-ocular pressure.
Diabetic retinopathy:
Diabetes is a systemic condition which could damage different parts of the eye including the back part and could impair visual acuity.
Macular degeneration:
Damage of the macula (which is the central part of retina); mostly age-related, causing loss of central vision.
Blepharitis:
The inflammation of the eyelid’s margin causing red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the accumulation of scaly material on the eyelid’s margin.
Chalazion:
A lump due to the blockage and inflammation of oil-producing glands of the eyelid.
Floaters:
The appearance of particles in the front of the visual field. In order to rule-out serious retinal problems your doctor needs to dilate your pupils to have a better evaluation of the condition.
Flashes of light in vision:
One of the most common causes of this symptom is the separation of vitreous gel from the surface of the retina. In order to rule-out serious retinal problems your doctor needs to dilate your pupils to have a better evaluation of the condition.
Conjunctivitis:
The inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is a layer covering areas of the front part of eye. Causes are infectious or non-infectious.
Crossed eyes or strabismus:
Deviation of eyes from their normal postions.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage:
Accumulation of blood under the conjunctiva. It could be associated with a problem at the back part of eye or especially in recurrent cases related with a systemic disease such as raised blood pressure or hematologic disorders.
Color vision defect:
The reduction or inability to distinguish certain colors secondary to acquired eye diseases or genetic disorders.
Astigmatism:
The blurred vision secondary to irregularity of the surface of cornea or the lens inside the eye.
